Taming the Tot -Behavior Patterns- 1

Feelings and emotions are very important factors in the process of growing up.Emotions are a combination of physical and metal states.Environment plays a very important part that affects emotions.Children can be happy, sad , aggressive, exited, jealous ……..We as parents and teachers must not try to suppress the child’s feeling. We should try to understand why the child is behaving in a particular way.We should never think the child to be bad or think these are moral issues. We have to work patiently and with love.

Remember :-

.  Never ridicule a child.

.  Always maintain your calm.

.  Be patient and loving .The child should never feel he is not liked.

.  Never single out a child in a group.Always take him aside and talk so the      he is not embarassed.

.  There is no magic word or method you can use to bring up your child into a     perfect person.

.  The child should always feel safe and secure.

.   Last of all set rules which you must abide to so that the child understands he cannot take advantage.

TEMPER TANTRUMS:-

Children start throwing tantrum by 2/3 years. At this age the kids are kings of their universe.Their parents almost always like to fulfill their whims and fancies ,little realizing that they are spoiling them.As kids grow they realise that throwing tantrums becomes a way of asserting themselves when their desires are not met.

Avoiding tantrums entirely is not possible. Gentle yet firm handling can help .Simple rules can be set and they must be followed. Each child is different so one cannot generalise disciplinary rules. Many a time one of the best way is to ignore the tantrum and give no special attention -after a while the child may resume his play.Parenting is not easy.It is all about love and patience.

Here are some children in a nasty mood hoping their demands will be fulfilled. They try all kinds of ways.Have a look at the pictures bellow.

Children are very smart they know what to do so that you  fulfill their demands.

Here are a few things that can help you discipline your child and also keep tantrums under control.Remember like i said earlier there is one one thing you can do which works with kids- No fairy wand works every time. There is no magic to discipline.-

–  Do not give into all demands espeically the unrealistic ones.Learn to draw     a line.  Only you will know when-  its your child.

–  Be calm and confident while handling the child during a tantrum.Never          feel guilty, be  firm yet gentle.

–  Set rules and be consistent.Kids know your weakness.Aggressive           behaviour should be best avoided with silence and disapproval.Let the child     calm down before you start a dialogue.

–  Be a good role model. Do  not scream and throw tantrums in front of your   child however angry you are.

–  Give positive attention and reinforce positive behaviour.

Many times tantrums set in due to frustration or lack of attention.Remember a tantrum does not reflect on your upbringing.

Do not try to analyse every action of your child. You are his teacher -he has to learn right and wrong and learn to make his decisions as he grows.

In the next few posts I shall write about some behaviour patterns which every parent gets concerned about.

Relax you are doing a good job bringing up your child. Always have faith in yourself.

MESSY FINGERS

Sticky fingers,tangled hair.

Scattered crayons everywhere.

Fancy art work on the wall, drawn by midgets 3 feet tall.

Tell me why and tell me now,

That was mine and I want it NOW!

Fix my bike.Buy me gum.

If you have it ,I want some.

Dirty faces ,grass stained knees,

Learning words like pretty please.

Endless hugs and goofy wet kisses,

Learning respect with Mr and Mrs.

Scrapped up hands, from falling down.

Tender tugs– on my night gown.

Need more paper for santa’s letter?

I was’nt so bad,but I’ve been better.

Watching a movie, again and again.

Mummy ,please put the tape back in.

Messy fingers,hair gone wild,

All in the life of a precious child…………        Debra S,Higginbotham.

What do you think- a perfect decription of a child ,is’nt it?

Children’s Day in India is know as “Bal Divas”.It is celebrated each year on the 14th of November which is also Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru’s(our first Prime Minister) birthday.

Nehruji was fond of children and roses. He often compared the two saying that children are like buds in the garden. Nehruji said that’children are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow so they should be carefully and lovingly nutured’

. He felt that the children are the strength of a country and the foundation of society. We lovingly call him Chacha Nehru. This year it is his 125th birthday.

Happy birthday Chacha Nehru and a Very Happy Children’s Day to all you darlings out there. You make us happy and bring a smile to our faces, making life full of exitement and fun.A Big Thank You.

Children’s Day is celebrated as a day of fun and frolic in honor of children.Schools celebrate this day by organizing cultural programmes.Sometimes teachers of the school preform dances ,sing and act for their students, which leaves them delighted. Art competitions are organized.Children are taken out for a picnic or movie. The exiting part in all this is, going with your school gang.

There is something  which  I have always wondered-What would the children really like to do?Have we ever made an effort to ask them how they would like to celebrate-after all it is there special day. Something to give a thought to!!!

Now as their parent, guide, teacher or friend somethings we can pledge:-

. Love and respect them.

. Be there for them with a guiding hand to support them when they faulter.

. Help them to grow up into good human beings.Teach them to care and share and love and respect all things around them.

. To be grateful and thankful for all they have. Be satisfied and happy for others.

. To live life king size- forgive, forget and move on.

. Save Mother Earth -Go green to give them a better tomorrow.

Well I don’t want you to think I am preaching. We don’t have to make extra effort ,-do whatever we can in our daily life.Begin with Gratitude each morning, children will just follow.

.

Note for you dear parent

School started in June and the new academic year is almost or I should say half over.Children right from the kindergarten are  now into their daily school routine. These days the daily timetable of school going kids is as busy and rigorous as the back to back work of many company  CEO’s. angry1 angry4 angry3         A very typical day of the child begins at 6.30/7am.The child is dragged out of his bed.He/she  has many chores to complete -incomplete HW,a pending project-then getting ready with having to finish breakfast and running to catch the school bus.He /she also has to remember his/her tution class books as often they have to go for tutions straight after school. Many times the child has to go to the many activity classes that parents think will mould him/her into the Perfect Adult. On top of all this he/she has to be well behaved and follow rules and timings at home.Little do we realize as parents that maybe our kids would like to read, listen to music or maybe just sit by themselves.Without realizing we put so mush pressure on our kids that they no longer can take it.Some kids may then suffer from anxiety attacks, depression and turn aggressive and stubborn. Some kids may suddenly become disinterested in everything and their grades may fall.Thats when the mums panic button switches on.

Tutions tution1

tution

Co-curricular activity-no free time

activityactivity1activity3From art ,drama to music  and computer-may be fun- but, tiring or maybe kids dont want to do these activities.

Read this poem:-

How happy am I when I crawl into bed-

A rattlesnake hisses a tune into my head,

A gay little centipede, all without fear,

Crawls over my pillow and into my ear.

But yet I am happy ,and live at my ease.

Oh,how I love my pillow,my dreams and my sleep.

We as parents dont leave any chance and want to train  our kids  in all activities so they can

be achievers at all they do.I think it is important to remember that every child is an individual

and is good at something. It is important to be happy and proud of what he /she can do and not

compare him with others his age. It is also important to remember that every child wants both time and

space for himself/herself.Respect that.Every kid wants to be an achiever and make us proud of him/her.Push them gently keeping in mind the child’s ability.Dont put pressure on them to preform.Learn to be happy with what they do,and express it to them.Teach them to never never give up and also to be satisfied and happy for others.

So cheers dear parents to happy parenting.Enjoy your kids growing up-be a friend but

remember to draw a line-you are his guide teaching him right and wrong,to think and become

independent and a caring human being. If we all try in our own little way imagine what this world would be like.

Remember children are miraculous.Love them ,surprise them and most of all always be there for them till they need you.-Each child grows up into an independent individual at his/her own time. Also remember children like to be disciplined, you are their guide.

Keep your kid fit and happy this monsoon

After a hot summer we all wait for the monsoon(rainy season). The rains bring a welcome respite from the heat ,but along with this it brings waterborne diseases like cold, cough ,fever and many more illinesses. This keeps us worried for our kids who enjoy  the rain.Let the rains not dampen our kids spirit.                               Children enjoying the rain:- rain1      rain4          rain3   rain2           not on me

Tips to ensure a healthy monsoon:-

.Most of the monsoon diseases are waterborne.Make sure your child drinks plenty of boiled or mineral water.

.Give your child warm and freshly cooked home food.Avoid eating out in restarants-if you want to eat then choose one which is frequented,as you will not get stale food.

.Eating at vendors is also a bad idea,as there will always be lack of hygiene.

.Fruits and vegetables must be washed before eating.Already cut fruits or vegetables are not good to eat, they get spoiled.

.Wash your hands before eating and feet when you come from outside.

.Do not let your child wear damp or wet clothes ,this will make them sick.

I am not asking you to just stay indoors just be smart and careful.Stay indoors only if there is very heavy rain otherwise go about your normal  routine. We need rain to survive.
