Archimedes’ Principle

Archimedes was a Greek mathematician and scientist. He was born around 2500 years ago. He loved math so much that often he forgot to eat when he was solving problems.

arc           arc1

The most famous story about Archimedes:-

Archimedes was always thinking about problems wanting to solve them.  One day when he went for a bath he was so busy thinking that he did not see the bathtub was full to the brim.He slid into the bathtub and noticed a large quantity of water flowed out of the bathtub.

arc bath   arc eureka

He suddenly jumped out of the tub and screamed “Eureka! Eureka!” Which means i have found it in Greek.

So kids he discovered that when an object is put into water ,  there would be  an upward force from the water which would push up the object -this force is equal to the weight of water displaced by the object. You will learn and understand this as you grow up .

This is the principle behind all the boats and ships. Do you know what a submarine is? Very simply it is a ship which is almost always travelling under water.

The submarine is a very good example of Archimedes Principle:-

sub  sub1

The submarine displaces a large amount of water so the upward force from the water on to the submarine is very large. That force is more than the weight of the submarine so it does not sink.

When the submarine has to be brought up ,the captain empties out its own water tank- this makes the submarine lighter- Now the upward force of water is more , so the submarine comes up.

Kids you must sit with your daddy he will demonstrate and show you.

Experience Gravity Free Water

What is gravity?

Gravity is a force pulling together all matter. Anything thrown up will fall down because of the gravitational pull. I have posted an experiment on gravity earlier in this section, may be you like to read it and do the experiment again.

Now for some super magic.- Before we start make sure you have an adult with you and do the experiment over a bucket or basin to avoid spilling water.

Things needed:-                                                                   glass cardb

1. A glass filled right to the top with water.

2. A square  piece of hard card board.

Instructions:-

1. Hold the glass in one hand and put the card board over the mouth of the glass.Make sure no air bubbles enter the glass(.Water should fill the glass to avoid bubbles.)

2. Hold the card board tight on the glass with the other hand and quickly turn the glass upside down.

3. Slowly remove your hand and observe.

What will happen:-

The water will defy gravity and stay in the glass. This happens as there is no air in the glass, and the air pressure from the outside of the glass is greater than the pressure of the water inside the glass. This keeps the card board in place and water from falling.

Wow, was’nt that fun? Show your friends this magic next time you meet.

Children in your own little way save this magical world.

Floating Egg

Hi kids, like I told you earlier- the world is full of magic.Lets have fun with a raw egg .

But make sure mum is around -if the egg falls and breaks, you will have the mess to clear.

Things you will need:-                                                 salt

1. 2 tall glasses 3/4 full of water.

2. 2 raw eggs.

3. Small bowl of salt and a spoon to stir.

Instructions:-

!. Take one glass and slowly drop the egg into it and observe.

You will notice the egg goes down to the bottom of the glass.

2. Now take the second glass of water, and put the salt into it and stir.

3. Slowly drop the egg into the glass and observe.

You will notice the egg now floats.

glass1 The first glass has plain water, the second glass has salt water.

This happens because the salt water is denser than the ordinary water .The denser the liquid the easier it is to float.

Density is how close the molecules of a substance are .Dense materials are heavy. Kids you will learn more about density as you grow up.But lets have more fun.

Fill half a glass with salty water and slowly drop in an egg. What happens? You are right the egg floats. Now very gently pour plain water in that glass making sure you dont disturb the salty water. You will notice the egg floating in the middle of the glass. The reason is the same- egg floats in the salty water.Wow! isnt that great.

dead3 You know kids this is really very exiting when you can just float in water with no effort. You can ask mum to tell you more about the dead sea.         With so many magical things in the world our  ‘ PEARLS OF WISDOM ”    Respect all things and save our Mother Earth.Bye till the next magical wonder.

MAKE YOUR OWN TELEPHONE

We learnt about sound. Now lets have fun and make our own telephone

using 2 paper cups and a piece of thread. It actually works.Next time your

friends come over  colour the cups and make the phone.Just follow the

instructions below:

Some thing to see how sound travels to your home:

you will understand better.Kids so many wonders in this world, some

invented by man.Dont you thing we should always thank God,be grateful

for all we have and help preserve all the wonders of the world?

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN CLOUDS IN A BOTTLE

We have talked about the rainy season, water and its importance, and

about water conservation.Kids, let’s do another easy experiment…..and

make our own clouds! We all have seen clouds up in the sky. They are formed

when the water vapour mixes with the cool air and the tiny dust particles.

During the rainy season the clouds are dark and scary.Otherwise we see

them like lots of  cotton patches.Have you ever just spent time just looking

up at clouds in the sky?You can imagine all kinds of animals and  things.

You must have looked out from the aeroplane window when the plane is above the

clouds.Didn’t you feel like just jumping and catching the lovely soft cotton.

Next time your friend comes home look up at the clouds and see what

you can imagine up there in the sky.

friend can see in the clouds…..you’ll be surprised!

EXPERIMENT

HOW TO MAKE  CLOUDS IN A BOTTLE

You will need:

1. a clear glass bottle

2. hot water

3. a plastic cover and rubberband to hold it as a lid

4.  match box and ice cubes

LOOK AT THE PICTURE BELOW

cloud in bottle

METHOD:

1.    Put hot water in the bottle(fill only 1/4 of the bottle).Make sure

mum is with you.

2.    Burn a match stick and drop it gently into the bottle of hot water.

3.   Cover the bottle with plastic and put the rubberband around the

opening to close the bottle.

4.   Put the ice cubes on top of the plastic and observe.

RESULT:

As the steam rises from the hot water and reaches the top of the

bottle, clouds can be seen when the steam touches the cold plastic

surface. The real clouds are also formed in a similar way- when water

vapours from the sea rise upwards and reach the cooler layers of the sky.

It is a magical world- take care of it.
